Welcome to the 'It's 5 o'clock Somewhere' edition of firewhiskeyfic! We, your Mods - sdk and torino10154, are so glad you could make it. We love everyone today. Feel free to friend us on DW. We promise not to stalk you... much. :D

Putting this note at the top: This round is a bit different. A marathon rather than a sprint. The pace will probably be a little slower, less intense than our usual events. Hopefully, someone will be around when you arrive but don't despair if it's quiet at times throughout the day.

Quick clarification for newbies: you don't have to use all the prompts--though that does make for a fun fic!--but since one of the categories for voting is "Best Use of Prompt" we do recommend using at least one. We try to have 2-3 prompts each round that are not HP-specific.

As you know, this is the Official Discussion Post. If you feel like chatting, and we hope you do, pop in here and let us know how it's going. Please do not discuss your fic/art. You can discuss ideas, drinks, how wasted you are, your favorite actors or musicians, the state of the world (a nice, safe topic LOL), or whatever floats your boat. Just don't discuss your fic/art. This is an anonymous fest until after the reveal, and we don't want hints being given as to what you're writing about. :)

And just so we're clear, you don't have to write pr0n, though it definitely makes for interesting reading when characters change right in the middle of shagging because you're too drunk to remember who you're writing about. ;) You can write for any fandom (including original), but though we're getting more diversity, we're still fairly HP-focused. Anything goes!

Both my kids are very into music. My daughter's shuffle can go from Elvis to Lizzo to Queen to 80s songs *I* grew up with that make me say, "How do you even know that song?!?" My son is a music major and took a day trip together (approx 6 hours in the car total) and listened to nothing but Bossa Nova. It is literally impossible to have road rage listening to "Mas que Nada." LOL

I'm currently listening to my "Upside Down Playlist" on Spotify for a little variety. (Spotify does a shuffle of your most played songs interspersed with 80s music.) But I'm finding that I'm not actually that nostalgic for 80s music. I think part of what I find amusing about Strangers Things is that my teen years were a bit of a horror show so it's like, "Yup, yup, this is pretty much exactly how I remember it."

I think most of us can relate to teen years like that. LOL Especially those of us who fit that time frame as well. I haven't watched the show but I never watch anything. LOL My kids have though.

It really nails the 80s. (And ironically when I was young I was a total wimp so 80s-me never could have handled the horror aspect of the show.) And I'm the exact age to go, "Yup, I went to school with that guy ... and that guy ... and her and ... " If the setting were more realistic, I wouldn't enjoy the show at all, but it's just over-the-top enough to not hit any of my 80s squicks.

That is so incredibly fitting for tonight! It means "Booze Hill Man" in Finnish, haha.
And apparently (I'm not Finnish), the lyrics are about stumbling home drunk through the forest and falling into said booze hill.
Perhaps paulamcg can help us. :)

Thanks, I tried googling a translation and Google very helpfully told me that "Viinamäen" means "Viinamäki" in English. Seriously, Google?

My fave thing that happens to me is when things autotranslate. A recent one was something about a soccer player whose last name basically translated to fireman in Italian. So I'm reading and completely baffled why there were firemen involved until I went to the original text.

So much this! Why TF are there suddenly "dancers" in this article about a bike race? Because one of the surnames is "Ballerini". ;) One of the most recent was a headline that said "Onions" because it was about Mario Cipollini...
Not to mention all the people cheering on "Big pit" or "Big well" ("Grande Pozzo", haha)

Yep. Or his surname means "red". Or "chubby". Or whatever else Italian surnames technically mean, haha. (As someone from a culture with surnames that are based on geographic locations or patronyms, Italian surnames are really interesting, since they quite often are based on nicknames or physical characteristics, not to mention all those that mean "foundling").

Yes, they do have some very interesting names. The nicknames are fun (or not, I suppose depends who you are). My husband's aunt lived next door to "half-ear" and his grandfather's nickname was "scissors" because he was a tailor. I'm trying to think if anyone from his family/that I know there has a great last name but the best I've got is his last name basically means "lefty." My last name is Norwegian origin so, yeah, just son of Ole. LOL

What's interesting is that it seems that tradition began in Roman times (think of "Cicero" which actually means "chickpea" and which might have related to him having a wart).

Also I read recently that there is a regional difference, in that the scribes in southern Italy wrote the surnames in singular (ending in -o) while the scribes in the North wrote them in plural (ending in -i). Of course, with the migration from the South to the North following WWII there are now North-Italians with surnames ending in -o.

I'm just a Scandinavian with a bog-standard patronymic surname too, haha.

Ah, that's interesting. I'm trying to think of the family names I know--my husband's family is from the South, though his parents did move North in the 50s--and there are certainly some that holds true. I suppose also it matters where one considers the North/South line. His does end with -i but it's also very common and has multiple spellings across different regions so it might not be a great example. LOL

Indeed! As a north European I don't want to intervene too much in that debate, I can just see that it seems to hold somewhat true still. And then there are the ones ending in -n, -l, -e etc. that seem to follow their own rules. ;)

Viinamäki is the term used for vineyards in old bible translations. Viinamäen mies (literally a man of booze hill) is a colloquial term for a drunkard, like boozer, but an old one... I mean the term is old, not necessarily the drunkard.

It never occurred to me before that "vine" and "wine" might be related. I assumed that vineyards were called that because grapes grow on vines, but... that's probably where "wine" comes from? (Or does "vine" come from "wine"? Etymology fascinates me.) Off to gooogle... yup, yup, definitely seems like vine/wine were the same word originally.

I have several playlists but one that has all my songs in it called Like Clowns in a Volkswagen, and I'm going to put that on shuffle, which means the first song is... Crystalline Green by Goldfrapp. A good start!
