Exactly! It's so weird how human memories work. It's like some days the negative filter is switched on and every single memory of my life was horrid yet some days the rose-colored filter is switchehd on and the past is somehow magically better.
It's always interesting listening to someone younger talk about "the good old days" but they're talking about about a period in time that's already in my "after it was crappy" timeline.
And, oh, god, the comments people make about music and how it was so much better in the (whatever time period they are nostalgic about, always linked to their own age and not any objective quality about music)'s and "music today sucks". Ugh. No. Comparing the classics of the past (the music that by definition people remember and continue to listen to long after the moment has passed) to whatever random song has just come out, it's never a fair comparison. The memorable stuff is always going to be a small percentage of the garbage, but that doesn't mean there is more garbage "these days". It just means we always forget the boring parts from the old days.
There's nothing rational about nostalgia. I've heard people tell stories while laughing about accidents that almost killed them.
