My neighbors and I all have ~almost the same house but some are more open than others. The original model was VERY open. We closed the dining room, with French doors and a door to the kitchen. Plus we have a separate living room/office and the TV or Great room. Other people that all is like an L shaped open space. One neighbor is kinda halfway between where they can have doors open or closed between the living and TV room. But as you say, if the TV is on, everyone on this floor can hear it if you can't shut the doors. That would drive me bonkers.
