purpleyin

Author's Notes (if any): Looking forward to more Antman and thought it'd be fun to get some cute bantery bonding in for these too, but some angst did sneak in.
“This was so much easier when you were 10 and you wanted me to help turn you into Nearly Headless Nick.”
“Dad! Stop whining and start chiselling,” Cassie says, pointing his hand back to the foam. “you said you'd help me win this contest.”
“Isn;t it cheating if I help you?”
Cassie gets that certain look as he glances to her, pursed lips and eyes up to the side, the 'well, technically' look that he's glad he can still clock.
“There isn't anything in the rules that says we can't have heklp. I just have to be able to wear it myself.”
“Okay, uh0huh, sure. Then chisel I will.” He gouges out the eye socket with gusto, the pauses as he ponders on the wide mouth slit. “Wait, are you gonna be able to breath okay in this thin?g Does it give off particles that you breathe in. Please, tell me this is afe.”
“It's safe,” she says with an eyebrow lift of exaspsteration.
“you know, I'd believe you a lot easier if I wasbn't so good at lying. I'm scared you inherted that from me,. Not that I lie to you,” he is quick to correct.
“don't worry, dad, I know when you're lying. Who do you think covers for you?”
“shoulf I be reading anything into the fact you want to cosplay Jack Skellington? You know, genderwise.”
“don't worry. I'm fine,” she says, continuing to fabric paint white stripes down the re purposed tux with a flourish. Luis made them promise to give it back for next year, he was unbeikliably stoked for wearing the same costume next year without having to lift a finger,.
“of course you're fine,” he babbles, “you'd be fine whatever the answer is. But I'd want to know, if, there's something to know. That you want to tell me.”
Cassie sighs loudly but he can tell from that mischieveous sparkle in her eyes she's also inherited that it's put apon and not anything bad.
“trust me, dad, you'd be the first to know. After, Laurie.”
“Ojay, good,” he says with a finality that turns out to be wrong. “Wait, who's >aurie? Boy or girl? Or, no, I don't even know if that matters.”
Cassie sighs again and this time it is with some exasperation and, if he's not mistaken, with a touch of sadness. And he realizes this is just one more thing he ought to know, had he not missed 5 years of her life.
“Laurie's my platonic soulmate. And they're a them, just do you know.”
“Right, gotcha. I've read up on that, I totally understand.”
There's a companionable silence for almost a minute before he feels compelled to break it, because he can't stop his mouth at the best of times.
“You know, I kind of wonder that's what me and your mom were destined to be. Maybe we got it all wrong when we thought it was romantic.”
Cassie glances up undr her lashes, a strangely unreadble look that acscares him a little. “Are you kust saying that to make me feel better about you guys divorcing?”
He pauses for a moment, actually thinking about it. Wondering where the thing he blurted out actually came from and comes to the conclusion: “No. I don't think so. It's more like...I think we'll always care abot each oher. Even though it isn't romantic anymore. Your mom was hurt by hat I did, because she cared, and it took a long time to get us back to something good, but once we did, she's never doubted me. She's been on my side. Paxton too,” he says, giving a little smile at the thought. “I've got a lot of teams I'm on theedays, and you, her and Paxton feel like another one. We feel like family, all of us, no matter what the law says.”
Cassie smiles, wide, beaming at him in exactly the way he adores and would have missed if he'd been aware of the last five years. “Yeah, we are.”
They sit in an actual companionable silence for a few minutes before Cassie it the one to break it this itme,s
“I think the universe agree with us,” she says shyly as she looks up at him, paintbush paused hovering over the collar. “It brought you back to us. And you brought back Paxton.”
“I'm glad I could do something good with my powers again. Something that doesn't get me thrown in jail.”
“Dad,” Cassie says, eyes big and somehow also looking exasperated, “You always do something good.”
And when she says it like that it almost makes it worth. Exceopt that it was time away from her.
“Well, I'm hoping good and lawful align for a while at least.”
She looks up again, this time with the star t of a sly grin he knoew alln too well from her mother. “It doesn't matter if it's lawful so long as no one catches you. So justbe faste”
“Cassie Lang, You take that back! I won't hear the end of it if your mom hears you say that. She already thinks I'm influencing you towards the life of a superhero. A d you didn't do me any favours asking for your own suit in front of her.”
“Relax. Besides, it doesn't count if no one hears you say it. Why did you think I don't have my phone on me. Plausible denialibility,. If the government wnts to spy on us they'r gonna have to get crative.”
“I'm starting to feel like I should be worried...”
“Don't. I got your geniosu but I got mom's smarts, I'll be fine.”
“We're gonna have a serious talk at some point, but right now I think I'm just gonna help with this and, you jknow, process all that.”
“We're gonna kick ass with this,” she says grinning again.
“no, you are. And I am so happy sweetie, belive me.” He leans over and presses a kiss to her head, afraid she'll bat him away, too old to accept. But for wahtever reason she doesn't. He doesn't know if it's because he's missed so much, forgiven being out of step, or if Cassie misses it just as much. He finds it doesn't matter so long as he gets this, every moment possible.
