Quick clarification for newbies: you don't have to use all the prompts--though that does make for a fun fic!--but since one of the categories for voting is "Best Use of Prompt" we do recommend using at least one. Also, we added 'Dad' as one of the prompts to help with anyone not doing Harry Potter. LOL In future we will try to have 2-3 prompts each round that are not HP-specific.

As you know, this is the Official Discussion Post. If you feel like chatting, and we hope you do, pop in here and let us know how it's going. Please do not discuss your fic/art. You can discuss ideas, drinks, how wasted you are, your favorite Hogwarts classes, best/worst 'Dad' moments from the books/movies, what you'll do if COVID is ever actually over, or whatever floats your boat. Just don't discuss your fic/art. This is an anonymous fest until after the reveal, and we don't want hints being given as to what you're writing about. :)

And just so we're clear, you don't have to write pr0n, though it definitely makes for interesting reading when characters change right in the middle of shagging because you're too drunk to remember who you're writing about. ;) You can write for any fandom (including original), but keep in mind the majority of our players are HP people. Anything goes!

I'm winding down. I have to teach math (four hours of online tutoring sessions) starting in ten hours, so ... kind of important I sleep tonight.

I've been generally holding my own with New Year's Resolutions. My big failure was the goal to sleep at a reasonable hour, which I'm not sure i've hit once yet.

Well, it was good to hear from you once more as you are "winding down". I am enjoying this comm so much and I have you to thank for it -- yes, it was from you that I first found out about this comm -- so, thank you kindly!

I think this is my third round (and possibly my least-coherent fic). It's been a blast as usual. But honestly the fun part is going to be reading all the stories. If previous rounds are any indication, they will be TERRIBLE and FANTASTIC at the same time.

I have not even read fic from the previous rounds, but it would please me if mine is ultimately considered to be "terrible and fantasitc". I gotta say, this has been the most relaxed and joyful ficcing I've ever done for a fic challenge. Maybe I should do moar drinking while ficcing, eh?

Indeed. I've given up on other fic challenges because I end up stressing out over whether what I'm writing is good enough. Drunk fic significantly lowers expectations. I feel like I'm sobering up. (Definitely typing better than a few hours ago.) So I think it's time to stop procrastinating and go to bed. Night!

I may have given up on fic exchanges for that reason of stress (and the seemingly new culture of ingratitude).

I won't mod proper exchanges anymore, haven't for years because there truly is always something. Creators who don't pay close enough attention to the request, drop-outs that leave one scrambling, and yes, recipients who can't be bothered and/or somehow thought they'd be getting a Nobel Prize winning novel. I just don't have the energy for that kind of thing anymore. /rant lol

I ca 't eve imagine how hardit would eb to mod a fest - I get so annoyed at mods for not bending to my every whimn, it must be quite the horrorshow on the ohter side of thisgs! :)

Not to toot my own horn LOL but generally I do think I'm pretty damn flexible and accommodating but that does mean occasionally people taking advantage, you know? Not often really but it happens. But the big difference between exchanges and everything else is the NEED to have a quality product that fits the request. It's just soooo much more stressful and I can't cope with that. LOL

I've been modding the due South Seekrit Santa for eight years (which makes me the mod to have done it for the longest so far in the 17-year history of the dSSS)...and I agree with everything you've said about why not to mod exchanges anymore. It's my devotion to that particular fandom that has kept me going in that mod role, but I won't ever take on another exchange-mod role and I don't know how much longer before I start looking for a replacement mod for the dSSS.

Oh, I completely understand that. I have a very similar background running fests at Snape_Potter but the most recent iteration of our Secret Santa-style fest is not a real exchange anymore. It was once but the year full 50% of participants dropped out, we changed it. I've announced that next year will be the last one but we'll see whether participants convince me otherwise. LOL

Oooh, new ideas! What have you done differently that made your Secret Santa fest "not a real exchange anymore"?

Hopefully I won't go on toooooo long but obviously some aspects depend on the number of anticipated participants, length of entries, that kind of thing. We don't get 40 people writing 100K fic, you know?

Anyway, in a nutshell, anyone who wants can leave up to 3 requests that have the basic prompt, things they like, and 3 "dealbreakers" aka the things they do not want. (Stuff like non-con, underage and a few other extreme kinks are spelled out in the rules to be excluded unless asked for specifically.)

Creators claim a particular prompt and have to create something that fits in those parameters. So the entry is crafted to a specific person's request but not everyone gets a "gift" at the end of the day. And while we do remind people to comment on the entry created for their prompt, it's not quite the bad form it is in an exchange should they not.

There are definitely people who I am sure would prefer we did it that way again but there are also other people who enjoy creating and aren't as concerned with receiving in return. I can't say I love it but as the mod, I don't have to scramble for pinch-hits. If someone drops, it just means fewer entries.

Ah. I understand the concept except for the Secret Santa part. When someone claims a prompt to make a gift, is their claiming anonymous?

So... the person claiming doesn't know who it's for until it posts and the person who requested it doesn't know who created it until reveals at the end of the fest.

Got it. I understand the whole thing now of how it runs.

I feel like I should back up the boat a little and explain that our first step in between what I described and a "normal" exchange" was having basically participants self-match. People signed up but then instead of being assigned a giftee, they had to claim it. So people who were fast, got what they wanted but everyone who prompted was required to participate and everyone got a gift. But invariably, I bet a few of those assignments were bad matches in the end simply because it was what was left, you know?

Oh, the matchihg thing, yes. For the dSSS, I first use the AO3 automated match generator, but then I go through the generated matches and change some of the matches to ones that I know will be better matched. And then, of course, if there are drop-outs there has to be another round of matching for pinch hits.

Terrible and fantastic is a goal, honestly, though some people only manage one of the two. *giggles*

I ABSOLUTELY have resorted to Firewhiskeyfic-style inebriation a few times when blocked on a fic I needed to get done. I do make a better effort to stay on track but it really can help.
