Quick clarification for newbies: you don't have to use all the prompts--though that does make for a fun fic!--but since one of the categories for voting is "Best Use of Prompt" we do recommend using at least one. Also, we added 'Dad' as one of the prompts to help with anyone not doing Harry Potter. LOL In future we will try to have 2-3 prompts each round that are not HP-specific.

As you know, this is the Official Discussion Post. If you feel like chatting, and we hope you do, pop in here and let us know how it's going. Please do not discuss your fic/art. You can discuss ideas, drinks, how wasted you are, your favorite Hogwarts classes, best/worst 'Dad' moments from the books/movies, what you'll do if COVID is ever actually over, or whatever floats your boat. Just don't discuss your fic/art. This is an anonymous fest until after the reveal, and we don't want hints being given as to what you're writing about. :)

And just so we're clear, you don't have to write pr0n, though it definitely makes for interesting reading when characters change right in the middle of shagging because you're too drunk to remember who you're writing about. ;) You can write for any fandom (including original), but keep in mind the majority of our players are HP people. Anything goes!

This is what I love about FWF because it allows me to get out of my head and not care and all that anxiety about what I'm writing and if it's *good enough* goes away and yeah, I am definitely responsible for a few terrible, terrible fics in FWF history, but I've also written things I've loved here, some of my very favorite things, and they wouldn't have happened without this community and the complete lack of giving fucks. XD

I find it very reassuring to have shared these thoughts about fanworks exchanges and challenges with you. It's really helping me with my own decision-making about where to put my fannish energies and where not to put them. I did not like how stressed out I got about some of the fic-writing commitments I was making, but because I did like much of what I ultimately wrote I though I "needed" that pressure in order to get writing done. Firewhiskey Fic has shown me what it's like to just relax and let the words flow as they will and ENJOY the process...AND enjoy interacting in comments with my fellow participants.

And as for what you said about collaborative work -- yes, that can be so tricky -- I've had a few good experiences there and a few bad experiences there. At this point I think I'd only do a collab again with someone with whom I've already done one that went well.

The pandemic made a cook of me. Before COVID, I ate in restaurants almost all the time -- since March 2020 I've been making every single meal a home-made meal except for twice a month that we walk to a local pizza place and get a pizza to take home -- other than that, no take-out food and no delivered food -- it's all on me to cook or bake every day.

Well, at least in that exchange I wrote some stuff that I liked having written even if some things in that exchange were not a good experience -- plus that kind of bad experience just makes me appreciate Firewhiskey Fic even more!

I've been modding the due South Seekrit Santa for eight years (which makes me the mod to have done it for the longest so far in the 17-year history of the dSSS)...and I agree with everything you've said about why not to mod exchanges anymore. It's my devotion to that particular fandom that has kept me going in that mod role, but I won't ever take on another exchange-mod role and I don't know how much longer before I start looking for a replacement mod for the dSSS.

Piggy-backing on this with regard to the fests I participate in. These days it's not many BUT they tend to be very low pressure, run by people I know/have worked with before. I kinda do need the small bit of pressure that a deadline brings and doing fests can bring me out of my shell a bit, trying new pairings, etc. But both as a participant AND a mod, fandom should be fun and a relaxed atmosphere, in my opinion, makes for a good experience and keeps people coming back as participants. I'm sure I'm not everyone's cuppa but there are mods I know have scared people off with how they run things.

As for collabs, I've not done many, but Shelly and I have done a handful together for a comm we both used to write for. That was a good time.

Oh, I completely understand that. I have a very similar background running fests at Snape_Potter but the most recent iteration of our Secret Santa-style fest is not a real exchange anymore. It was once but the year full 50% of participants dropped out, we changed it. I've announced that next year will be the last one but we'll see whether participants convince me otherwise. LOL

I learned to make fried rice last year. AND I learned how to make banoffee pie. It is probably not a coincidence that I gained weight last year. (Banoffee pie is MAGICAL.)

Oooh, new ideas! What have you done differently that made your Secret Santa fest "not a real exchange anymore"?

I'm impressed. I have NOT mastered making things that require a pie crust.

Hopefully I won't go on toooooo long but obviously some aspects depend on the number of anticipated participants, length of entries, that kind of thing. We don't get 40 people writing 100K fic, you know?

Anyway, in a nutshell, anyone who wants can leave up to 3 requests that have the basic prompt, things they like, and 3 "dealbreakers" aka the things they do not want. (Stuff like non-con, underage and a few other extreme kinks are spelled out in the rules to be excluded unless asked for specifically.)

Creators claim a particular prompt and have to create something that fits in those parameters. So the entry is crafted to a specific person's request but not everyone gets a "gift" at the end of the day. And while we do remind people to comment on the entry created for their prompt, it's not quite the bad form it is in an exchange should they not.

There are definitely people who I am sure would prefer we did it that way again but there are also other people who enjoy creating and aren't as concerned with receiving in return. I can't say I love it but as the mod, I don't have to scramble for pinch-hits. If someone drops, it just means fewer entries.

Oh, I agree about how a little bit of deadline pressure can be helpful *looks askance at my over-crowded no-deadline plotbunny hutch* -- just that now I'll be doing fests that have a deadline but don't have a penalty if you end up still-a-WIP-after-deadline (example: the "Psychic Wolves for Lupercalia" fanworks fest that I do every February is like "if you can't post it this February, come back and post it next February").

I feel like I should back up the boat a little and explain that our first step in between what I described and a "normal" exchange" was having basically participants self-match. People signed up but then instead of being assigned a giftee, they had to claim it. So people who were fast, got what they wanted but everyone who prompted was required to participate and everyone got a gift. But invariably, I bet a few of those assignments were bad matches in the end simply because it was what was left, you know?

Ah. I understand the concept except for the Secret Santa part. When someone claims a prompt to make a gift, is their claiming anonymous?

Oh, the matchihg thing, yes. For the dSSS, I first use the AO3 automated match generator, but then I go through the generated matches and change some of the matches to ones that I know will be better matched. And then, of course, if there are drop-outs there has to be another round of matching for pinch hits.
